Ludwig Feuerbach

Ludwig Feuerbach was a German philosopher associated with post-Hegelian thought and philosophical materialism (the view that reality is fundamentally physical). Born in Landshut, Bavaria, the son of the jurist Paul Johann Anselm von Feuerbach, he studied theology at Heidelberg before turning to philosophy under Hegel in Berlin. His best-known work, The Essence of Christianity (1841), advanced an anthropological account of religion, arguing that ideas of God express projected human qualities and needs. His writings on religion, nature, and human sensuousness influenced later thinkers, including the young Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. He spent decades in relative seclusion and died near Nuremberg in 1872.
