Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author best known for his literary fairy tales, among the most widely translated works in publishing history. Born in Odense to a poor shoemaker and a washerwoman, he moved to Copenhagen at fourteen to pursue the theatre, then studied at grammar school with support from the theatre director Jonas Collin. He wrote poems, novels, plays, and travel books, but achieved lasting renown for his literary fairy tales, which he began publishing in 1835, including "The Little Mermaid" and "The Emperor's New Clothes" (1837), "The Ugly Duckling" (1843), and "The Snow Queen" (1844). He traveled extensively across Europe and died in Copenhagen in 1875.
