Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali poet, songwriter, novelist, playwright, essayist and painter. Born in 1861 into a Brahmo family in Calcutta, he wrote prolifically in Bengali from childhood. His verse collection Gitanjali, in his own English rendering, brought him the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature, the first awarded to an Asian. He reshaped Bengali literature and music, composing over two thousand songs; two of his compositions became the national anthems of India and Bangladesh. In 1901 he founded a school at Santiniketan that grew into Visva-Bharati University. He traveled widely, lecturing across Asia, Europe and the Americas, and died in 1941.
