Roald Amundsen
1872 CE–1928 CE · Explorer · Borge, near Fredrikstad
Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian polar explorer. Born in 1872 near Fredrikstad and raised in Christiania (Oslo), he abandoned medical studies for the sea. Aboard the Gjøa he completed the first navigation of the Northwest Passage (1903-1906). On 14 December 1911 his party became the first to reach the South Pole, ahead of Robert Falcon Scott's expedition. He later turned to Arctic aviation, crossing the polar basin by the airship Norge in 1926. In June 1928 he vanished over the Barents Sea while flying to search for survivors of Umberto Nobile's wrecked airship Italia; his remains were never recovered.
