Robert Falcon Scott

Robert Falcon Scott was a British Royal Navy officer and polar explorer. Born near Plymouth in 1868, he entered the navy as a cadet at thirteen and rose through its ranks. He led two expeditions to Antarctica: the Discovery Expedition (1901–1904), which conducted scientific and geographical survey work, and the Terra Nova Expedition (1910–1913). On the second, Scott and four companions reached the geographic South Pole on 17 January 1912, arriving to find that Roald Amundsen's party had preceded them by about five weeks. All five men died on the return march: Petty Officer Edgar Evans died near the foot of the Beardmore Glacier, Captain Oates walked out to his death on the Ross Ice Shelf, and Scott, Wilson, and Bowers died at their final camp on the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott's expedition diaries were later recovered and published.
