Emily Brontë

Emily Brontë was an English novelist and poet, one of three literary sisters raised in the parsonage at Haworth, Yorkshire. She was born in 1818 at Thornton and moved to Haworth as an infant. As a child she was briefly a pupil at the Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge (1824-25), withdrawn after two of her elder sisters fell fatally ill, and she later spent a few months at Roe Head School in 1835. Largely educated at home, she worked as a teacher at Law Hill near Halifax (1838-39), and in 1842 studied languages in Brussels. In 1846 she published poems jointly with her sisters under the pen name Ellis Bell, and in 1847 issued her single novel, Wuthering Heights. She died at Haworth in 1848 of tuberculosis, aged thirty. Her poetry and novel became widely studied after her death.
