1799 CE1866 CE · Acharonim · Magnuszew

Yitzchak Meir Rotenberg-Alter (1799–1866) was the founder of the Ger (Gora Kalwaria) Hasidic dynasty and one of the most influential leaders of Polish Jewry in the nineteenth century. The grandfather of the Sefat Emet and a major figure in the Hasidic movement, he established Ger as a major center of Hasidic learning and practice. He was known for his extraordinary memory, penetrating halakhic insights, and ethical teachings that combined Talmudic erudition with Hasidic spirituality. His collected teachings, the Chiddushei HaRim (Novellae of the Rim), became widely studied. He led thousands of followers and shaped the character of Polish Hasidim through his emphasis on moral discipline, intellectual rigor, and devotion to Torah study alongside religious practice.
