Sergei Prokofiev

1891 CE1953 CE · Composer · Sontsivka (Sontsovka)

Sergei Prokofiev was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor whose output spans symphonies, concertos, operas, ballets, film scores, and piano works. Trained at the St. Petersburg Conservatory under Rimsky-Korsakov and others, he built an early reputation for percussive, modernist writing. After the 1917 revolution he lived abroad, in the United States and then Paris, producing ballets for Diaghilev and works such as the opera "The Love for Three Oranges." In 1936 he settled in the Soviet Union, where he wrote "Peter and the Wolf," music for Eisenstein's films, and the ballet "Romeo and Juliet." He died in Moscow on 5 March 1953.
