Simone Weil

Simone Weil was a French philosopher, political activist, and religious thinker. Trained at the École Normale Supérieure, she taught philosophy while engaging in labor politics, taking factory jobs to share workers' conditions and briefly joining an anarchist unit in the Spanish Civil War. Her writing spans political theory, ethics, mathematics, and mysticism, centering on attention, affliction, force, and rootedness. After France's fall she moved through Marseille, New York, and London, where she worked for the Free French. She died in England in 1943 of tuberculosis, aggravated by limiting her food intake. Most of her influential work, including notebooks, was published posthumously.
