Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
1900 CE–1944 CE · Writer · Lyon
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was a French writer and aviator born in Lyon in 1900. He flew airmail routes for the Aéropostale company across North Africa and South America, work that shaped much of his prose. His books include Southern Mail, Night Flight, Wind, Sand and Stars, Flight to Arras, and the illustrated fable The Little Prince, written during wartime exile in the United States. After the fall of France he joined a Free French reconnaissance squadron (Groupe 2/33) in the Mediterranean, serving from bases in Tunisia, Sardinia, and Corsica. On 31 July 1944 he departed on a reconnaissance flight from Borgo, Corsica, and did not return; wreckage of his aircraft was recovered off Marseille decades later.
