Diego Rivera
1886 CE–1957 CE · Painter · Guanajuato
Diego Rivera was a Mexican painter best known for large-scale fresco murals produced in Mexico and the United States from the 1920s through the early 1950s. Born in Guanajuato in 1886, he trained at the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City, then studied in Europe from 1907, absorbing Spanish academic painting, Cubism in Paris, and Italian Renaissance fresco technique during a 1920-1921 study trip through Italy. Returning to Mexico in 1921, he became a central figure of the Mexican muralist movement, depicting national history, labor, and indigenous life on public walls. He also painted major murals in the United States, in San Francisco (1930-1931), Detroit (1932-1933), and New York (1933). He was married to painter Frida Kahlo and died in Mexico City in 1957.
