Virginia Woolf

Virginia Woolf (born Adeline Virginia Stephen, 1882-1941) was an English novelist, essayist and critic, and a central figure of the Bloomsbury Group. Her novels, including Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), Orlando (1928) and The Waves (1931), developed stream-of-consciousness narration and interior monologue. Her book-length essay A Room of One's Own (1929) examined women and literature. With her husband Leonard Woolf she founded the Hogarth Press in 1917, publishing new writers. She experienced recurrent mental illness across her life. On 28 March 1941 she drowned herself in the River Ouse near her Sussex home, Monk's House.
