Jean Sibelius

Jean Sibelius was a Finnish composer whose orchestral works became central to the emergence of a Finnish national musical voice. Born in Hämeenlinna in 1865, he trained as a violinist at the Helsinki Music Institute before continuing studies in Berlin and Vienna. His choral symphony Kullervo (1892) drew on the Kalevala, and later works — seven symphonies, the tone poem Finlandia, the Violin Concerto, and the Karelia music — spread internationally. In 1904 he settled at Ainola, a house near Järvenpää, where he lived for the rest of his life. After the 1920s he published little, a period later called the "silence of Järvenpää." He died there in 1957.
