James Joyce

James Joyce was an Irish novelist, short-story writer and poet, born in Dublin in 1882 and educated by the Jesuits before graduating from University College Dublin. In 1904 he left Ireland with Nora Barnacle and spent most of his life abroad, first teaching English at Berlitz schools in Pola (Pula) and Trieste, briefly working as a bank clerk in Rome, and later settling in Zurich and Paris. His works include the story collection Dubliners, the semi-autobiographical A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, the experimental novel Ulysses, and the linguistically dense Finnegans Wake. His use of interior monologue and stream-of-consciousness technique made him a central figure of literary modernism. He died in Zurich in 1941.
