Fernando Pessoa
1888 CE–1935 CE · Poet · Lisbon
Fernando Pessoa was a Portuguese poet, writer, and translator, and one of the central figures of European modernism. Born in Lisbon in 1888, he spent much of his childhood in Durban, South Africa, where he was educated in English, before returning to Lisbon in 1905. He worked as a commercial translator while writing prolifically in Portuguese and English. He is best known for his "heteronyms" — fully realized fictional authors, chiefly Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, and Álvaro de Campos, each with a distinct biography and style. Much of his work, including The Book of Disquiet, was left unpublished at his death in 1935 and issued posthumously.
