1745 CE–1815 CE · Hasidic · Józefów Biłgorajski
Jacob Isaac Horowitz, known as the Chozeh (Seer) of Lublin, was a prominent Hasidic master who lived in Lublin, Poland, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He was a student of the Maggid of Mezeritch and became one of the most influential figures of Hasidic Judaism in his generation. The Chozeh was renowned for his pietistic devotion, mystical insights, and the intensity of his spiritual practice. He founded a major court in Lublin that attracted thousands of followers and was known for his emphasis on the inner dimensions of Torah and the power of intention (kavanah) in prayer and observance. Though he left no published works during his lifetime, his teachings were preserved and transmitted by his students, most notably Rabbi Simcha Bunim of Peshischa, and he remains a towering figure in Hasidic tradition.
